About the Artwork

Pearl Fryar

Bishopville, SC

Connecting the Formal Garden and the Cut Flower Garden, this whimsical living sculpture is the work of legendary South Carolina topiary artist Pearl Fryar. Carefully shaped from Ilex vomitoria (yaupon holly), these playful forms—affectionately known as "Sticky Buns"—reflect Fryar's remarkable ability to transform ordinary plants into extraordinary works of art.

A self-taught artist from nearby Bishopville, South Carolina, Pearl Fryar (1940–2026) earned international recognition for his imaginative topiary creations, proving that gardening could be every bit as expressive as painting or sculpture. His vibrant garden became a destination for visitors from around the world and inspired countless people with his simple but powerful message of "Love, Peace & Goodwill."

These living sculptures honor one of South Carolina's most influential horticultural artists while reflecting Moore Farms Botanical Garden's own mission of blending horticulture, art, and creativity. If you've never experienced Pearl Fryar's Topiary Garden, we highly encourage you to visit. Located just 25 miles away in Bishopville, it remains one of the Southeast's most extraordinary horticultural destinations and a fitting companion to your visit to Moore Farms Botanical Garden.
