Spring House

Blending the exotic with the familiar, the Spring House beautifully reflects the spirit of Moore Farms Botanical Garden itself. Inspired by the simple form of a traditional tobacco barn, the structure combines materials from around the world and close to home. The handcrafted thatched roof is woven from reed grass imported from Europe, the sturdy pine timbers were sourced from a neighboring South Carolina county, and the bamboo was harvested right here in the garden.

One of the Spring House's most remarkable features is its thatched roof, a centuries-old building technique known for its natural beauty, insulation, and durability—often lasting up to twice as long as a conventional roof. Look closely and you'll also discover traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery throughout the structure, a timeless woodworking method that relies on craftsmanship rather than nails or metal fasteners. Suspended overhead is a stunning hand-blown glass sculpture created by the artists of One Eared Cow Glass in Columbia, South Carolina.

Just outside, the Spring House comes to life through an interactive water feature inspired by historic spring-fed gathering places. A colorful mosaic aqueduct channels water from the hand pump into the sculptural concrete basin below. Be sure to give the pump a few strokes to watch the water flow and experience this unique feature in action.
