Fire Tower

Standing more than 100 feet tall, the fire tower is one of Moore Farms Botanical Garden's most recognizable landmarks. Visible from nearly every corner of the garden, it serves as both a striking focal point and a symbolic gateway, welcoming every visitor as they arrive and bidding them farewell as they leave. Draped in the soft, cascading foliage of bald cypress from our renowned Taxodium collection, the tower has become as beautiful as it is iconic.

Before satellites, aircraft, and modern technology transformed wildfire detection, towers like this one played a vital role in protecting South Carolina's forests. During periods of high fire danger, trained observers climbed to the tower's cab, scanning the horizon for wisps of smoke. Using maps, compasses, and a system of triangulation with neighboring towers, they could pinpoint the location of a fire and quickly dispatch firefighters—often stopping small fires before they became devastating wildfires. In those days, fire towers were dotted all around the South. Today, our fire tower is one of the only remaining preserved towers in the Pee Dee area.

Originally stationed in nearby Olanta, South Carolina, this tower faithfully served it's purpose there for many years before being retired. Today, it stands not so much as a lookout for fire, but as a tribute to the Pee Dee region's rich forestry and land-management heritage. Its distinctive bright red top symbolizes its new role as a beloved garden landmark rather than a working fire tower.

The tower found its new home at Moore Farms Botanical Garden in 2004 after being purchased at a silent auction in Olanta. As the story goes, the winning bid seemed like quite a bargain—until the bill arrived to relocate a 100-foot steel tower! Today, it remains one of the garden's most iconic features, connecting visitors to both the natural beauty of the garden and the history of the landscape beyond it.
