Thistle and Nine Roses

This work started with a single four inch nail. From that I saw a way to contribute to the thistle and rose motif. My view is that the weed like nature of the thistle is usually not embraced. I remember as a child seeing wild roses and thistles entwined on Cape Breton Island. This work is from that memory.

Tony Urry was born 1960 and showed early interest and skill in the creative arts. As the child of academics mired in the hard sciences, this was discouraged. Through a widely varied work history, from short order cooking to cabinet making to boat building, to being a radiation safety officer at a university to eventually being a senior design engineer, I arrived at a point where I could no longer deny the urge to create sculpture. I recognized that while the apparent utility of an object might seem to confer some value, the pure visual aspect is what immediately affects me. I have kept the reality of my art addiction a secret from all but a very few close friends until now. This submission constitutes my admission that I am an artist. My preferred media include wood, steel, sound, and light.
