The sculpture, Mates, refers to the specialrelationship its title implies, where both similar and opposite traits mustbecome part of the bond between two individuals. The figure on the left, standing tall and stout, expresses strength, confidence and simplicity, whilethe one on the right is more complex and mysterious. On its top, a tilted bowl-shapedheadstone peers out to the world as if inviting intuitive insight, while theshelf stone on the lower left of the body offers an egg-shaped gift for itsmate to consider.
Several years ago, my family and I traveled to New Zealandwhere I encountered the incomparable stonework of Chris Booth which catalyzedmy beginning to use natural stone as a primary medium of artistic expression. Now, I find that the result of this focus has continued to bring not only againing creative momentum to my work but a sustained, palpable love for it’smaking.
For me, making art is analchemical process. And after 50 years of practice, it remains the best way Iknow to transform raw, crude material, with hands inspired by feelings from theheart, into soulful beauty and even the experience of love within me, that ongood days, can spark out to others when they engage the work.
