Inhale

Artist Statement

Keith Bryant

Weaverville, NC

My art practice is driven by an exploration of materials and space that satisfy my ideas. As a sculptor I find that when I think of how to express my interests I am looking for materials that best suit the idea. This has lead me to work in wood, metal, clay, plaster, lead, found objects, resins and many other materials. These ideas express themselves in the whole range of scale from the hand held to outdoor installations. My current work I call Kites. By working in 16 gauge metal I am able to create forms that are volumetric and light enough to play with a precarious balance. I am interested in the tension between balance and weight. "Inhale" is an exploration on how to capture the feeling of taking the deepest breath possible and how that makes your body feel. How doing so can recenter ones mind set and outlook.

"Inhale" is part of a series of work that I call Kites. This series came from an interest to get my work off the ground, to break the bounds of gravity. The work plays with the tension of the visual weight of the form moving away from gravity. I find it satisfying to find solutions to this tension and use color to reinforce the movement and expression of the form. Inhale is about the feeling of taking the deepest breath possible and how that makes your body feel, the reset that can happen while giving us a chance to separate ourselves from what is holding us down.
