Southern Heritage Plants

The Southeast is one of the most culturally distinct areas in the US. It should come as no surprise that the region’s garden history, horticultural practices and plant palette are equally unique. Southern garden mainstays such as camellias, magnolias and live oaks have come to symbolize the splendor of an entire region. To the people who live here, these plants are more than just romantic imagery; they are part of the fabric of our lives, influencing our moods, well-being, and quality of life daily. They are the scent of ginger lilies, the shelling of pecans with a friend or simply a pretty vase of spring jonquils. In whatever form they are experienced, these plants have left an indelible mark on our culture.

At Moore Farms Botanical Garden, Southern heritage plants not only serve as an introduction to the surrounding landscape, but also as a cultural link to the neighboring communities. By preserving unusual and heirloom varieties, we ensure that future generations will come to know these special plants. Antique roses, crinum, chrysanthemums, camellias, and daffodils are particularly well represented in our collection.
